The idea of play

When discussing the idea of play today and interactivity, it made me think of this article I came across in another class.  Children/youngsters are  spending on average over 7 hours a day with electronic gadgets such as a computer. The idea of play has almost shifted from a real world to a digital world.  Will a typical child today be lacking that creative aspect of play that is typically developed outside of the digital world?
